# Closing and restoring a business

A business is closed by its owner, or by Talemo when the balance has been below
zero for five days (see [Low balance and blocks](low-balance-stages.md)). In
both cases the data goes to the archive, and the business can be brought back
for 30 days.

## Closing

Only the owner closes a business: **About the business** → **Close the
business…**. The dialog **Close "Name"?** lists the consequences before the
button:

- access is gone for everyone at once, the access keys are revoked and connected
  programs are disconnected;
- records, conversations and assistant logs go to the archive;
- the balance of the business goes to the organization, and with this money the
  owner opens a new business or brings this one back;
- if the balance is below zero, the minus stays with the business.

To close, the owner types the name of the business and, if the last sign-in was
more than 10 minutes ago, signs in once more. The owners get the letter **The
business is closed** with the date until which it can be brought back. The
archive is kept for 3 years and the business does not pay for it.

## Restoring

Only the owner restores a business, within 30 days of closing. The
**Organization** page shows closed businesses with **Restore until** and the
date; if the organization has no open business, the first screen offers the same
for each closed one.

The money for the restore comes from the organization. It has to hold at least
the smallest pack, $10, or, if that is more, enough to cover the minus and the
reserve of the business. Talemo puts that amount into the field, and what is left
stays with the organization. If the organization has too little, the dialog says
how much is needed and offers **Top up**; that payment goes to the organization
and adds to what it has.

The restore takes 5 to 10 minutes. The page shows that the business is coming
back, and an email arrives when it is done with the letter **The business is
restored**. Records, conversations and assistant logs come back from the archive,
and the team can sign in.

Access keys and program connections do not come back. They are issued and
connected again, so that a forgotten key does not come back to life with the
business.

## When it can no longer be restored

After 30 days the page says that the business can no longer be brought back. The
window also closes when the organization is deleted, together with its money (see
[Deleting an account and an organization](../account/deleting-account-and-organisation.md)).
The organization can still open a new business from scratch, with its first
branch and a payment.
